I’m doing something a little different this week. I’m putting my own wellbeing first as I write this.
I’ve really been enjoying writing these check-ins, but last week I overdid it. I spent way too many hours working on it and finally scheduled the post at 2am last Tuesday. Then I paid for it. It had a negative effect on my energy and what I had left to give for the whole rest of my week.
None of us are immune to sleep deprivation. I track my physiologic recovery with an Oura Ring and my readiness scores were between 68 and 77 Wednesday through Friday. I usually run mid to high 80’s, sometimes in the 90’s. Today I’m an 88, which is optimal for me. I feel these results. Those lower scores correlate with a feeling of surviving but running on empty — It’s not sustainable.
So, this is part of my commitment to being a wellbeing-first organization. I’ve got to walk the walk. It’s tempting to push too hard — to give more than I have to give because I care so much — all of us in medicine know what this feels like. We are altruistic by definition, but self-sacrifice has gone too far.
I will close with a super-brief update of the goings on from across the organization:
The retreat planning is moving forward (exciting!)
We have a prior auth strategy follow-up with ACP next Monday. Here’s how prio-auth is going:
I’m still passionate about the “4 Disciplines of Execution” methodology and doing my best to start applying it here.
How are you doing this week?
Onward!
